Marketing &amp; Communications tracks all inquiries from the media, and when appropriate, can provide additional or more appropriate sources for your story.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reporters must identify Samaritan Health Services\u2019 staff by their professional title in stories related to the staff member\u2019s work or role at Samaritan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reporters are asked to use the complete name of the institution \u2013 Samaritan Health Services &#8211; when referring to it in a print or broadcast story. If referring to another affiliated entity of Samaritan Health Services, please verify appropriate doing business as name by using Samaritan\u2019s online&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/locations\/find-a-location\/\">location directory<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advance notice of on-site interviews is necessary so Marketing &amp; Communications staff can arrange interview location, notify the operational areas involved and obtain authorization from any patients, members, family members or staff for your story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To protect the privacy of all other Samaritan patients, members and families, Marketing &amp; Communications must accompany all reporters, film crews and photographers at any Samaritan-affiliated campus or location. No patient-identifying information, including patient faces, can be recorded without consent (even if their faces or information will be \u2018blurred\u2019 by media personnel later).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In general, a patient\u2019s authorization is required in order for Samaritan Health Services to provide identifiable patient information to members of the media. Samaritan Health Services may provide members of the media with a one-word condition report (e.g. \u2018good,\u2019 \u2018fair,\u2019 or \u2018critical\u2019) without first obtaining the patient\u2019s authorization when the media representative asks for an update on the patient\u2019s status by name, and the patient does not object.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_b932616c70e8b67921f566b24afe2d13\" class=\"shs-block accordion is-style-fill\">\n\t<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\n\t\t<button\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\tid=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0250387.63349455\"\n\t\t\tclass=\"accordion-control\" aria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\taria-controls=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a02503c2.53326947\">Patient Status or Condition Reports <span class=\"iconfont-chevron-right\"><\/span><\/button>\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<section\n\t\tid=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a02503c2.53326947\"\n\t\tclass=\"accordion-panel\"\n\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0250387.63349455\" style=\"height:0\">\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/hipaa\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)<\/a>&nbsp;of 1996, along with other state and federal laws and regulations, provide privacy protections to Samaritan Health Services patients and members. Among other things, these rules and regulations govern what information Samaritan can share with the media, and in what circumstances.&nbsp;Below are the guidelines Samaritan follows in responding to media requests about its patients, when appropriate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>When Media Asks About a Patient by Name<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a reporter asks about a Samaritan hospital patient, Samaritan may share the patient\u2019s general condition ONLY if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The media representative specifically requests the patient by name, and the patient (or their legal guardian on the patient\u2019s behalf) has not opted out of Samaritan\u2019s facility directory or otherwise objected to information being shared with the media.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the patient is unconscious or incapable of making their own health care decisions, Samaritan will provide a condition report to the media ONLY if Samaritan determines that the disclosure to the media would be in the patient\u2019s best interest.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients can find more information about Samaritan\u2019s facility directory, including how to opt out of this process, in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/patient-visitors\/patient-privacy-rights\/\">Notice of Privacy Practices.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Condition Definitions<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are the one-word condition updates Samaritan may provide when the media requests an update on a patient by name (and the patient has not opted out of this process as described above):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Undetermined\u2014Patient is awaiting physician and\/or assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good\u2014Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fair\u2014Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serious\u2014Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical\u2014Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_38533784d764ec12761ffd3940a3f24c\" class=\"shs-block accordion is-style-fill\">\n\t<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\n\t\t<button\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\tid=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0251d04.36478589\"\n\t\t\tclass=\"accordion-control\" aria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\taria-controls=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0251d16.09518146\">Information on Children <span class=\"iconfont-chevron-right\"><\/span><\/button>\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<section\n\t\tid=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0251d16.09518146\"\n\t\tclass=\"accordion-panel\"\n\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0251d04.36478589\" style=\"height:0\">\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<p>If a reporter provides a minor patient\u2019s name and requests a one-word condition report on the patient, Samaritan will only provide that information if the patient\u2019s parent or legal guardian has not opted the minor patient out of Samaritan\u2019s facility directory as described above. If the minor patient is able to consent to care under state law, the minor patient may decide on their own whether or not to be listed in the facility directory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_850a5fd8ff851e2938d6ce2e3fad083a\" class=\"shs-block accordion is-style-fill\">\n\t<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\n\t\t<button\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\tid=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0253439.67922811\"\n\t\t\tclass=\"accordion-control\" aria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\taria-controls=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0253454.84224985\">Public Figures <span class=\"iconfont-chevron-right\"><\/span><\/button>\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<section\n\t\tid=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0253454.84224985\"\n\t\tclass=\"accordion-panel\"\n\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0253439.67922811\" style=\"height:0\">\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<p>Public figures and celebrities are not subject to different standards than other patients with respect to the privacy of that person\u2019s information. There is no public information exception to HIPAA, so even if information on a public figure or celebrity\u2019s care becomes known publicly, either by the patient directly or from others, Samaritan will not disclose any information to the media without authorization or, if the patient did not object to being listed in Samaritan\u2019s facility directory, a one-word condition report.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_75d59552e49ab247421f68d043e36a78\" class=\"shs-block accordion is-style-fill\">\n\t<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\n\t\t<button\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\tid=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0254820.97711505\"\n\t\t\tclass=\"accordion-control\" aria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\taria-controls=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0254830.46931725\">Death of a Patient <span class=\"iconfont-chevron-right\"><\/span><\/button>\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<section\n\t\tid=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0254830.46931725\"\n\t\tclass=\"accordion-panel\"\n\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0254820.97711505\" style=\"height:0\">\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<p>Samaritan may report the death of a patient to the appropriate authorities, as required by law. However, Samaritan will not disclose a patient\u2019s cause of death, date of death or time of death to the media, even if that information becomes publicly known.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_b84be13008d4b2a9dcfedbd9dd954c9c\" class=\"shs-block accordion is-style-fill\">\n\t<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\n\t\t<button\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\tid=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a02569c3.06716448\"\n\t\t\tclass=\"accordion-control\" aria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\taria-controls=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a02569d3.26019941\">Patient Interview Requests <span class=\"iconfont-chevron-right\"><\/span><\/button>\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<section\n\t\tid=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a02569d3.26019941\"\n\t\tclass=\"accordion-panel\"\n\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a02569c3.06716448\" style=\"height:0\">\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<p>The following activities require written authorization from the patient:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drafting a detailed statement (i.e., anything beyond the one-word condition) for approval by the patient or the patient\u2019s legal representative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking photographs of patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interviewing patients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If reporters are invited into a hospital by a patient or the patient\u2019s family, the media must contact the hospital\u2019s Marketing &amp; Communications representative to make arrangements before entering the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marketing &amp; Communications staff will always accompany reporters to ensure the privacy of other hospital patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samaritan will deny the media access to the patient if it is determined that the presence of photographers or reporters will aggravate the patient\u2019s condition or interfere with patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the patient is a minor, permission for any of these activities generally must be obtained from a parent or legal guardian, unless the minor is able to consent for care on their own under state law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_53d1694bec788249891657c5bf9628c2\" class=\"shs-block accordion is-style-fill\">\n\t<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\n\t\t<button\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\tid=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0257f02.21858186\"\n\t\t\tclass=\"accordion-control\" aria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\taria-controls=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0257f15.59991895\">Matters of Public Record <span class=\"iconfont-chevron-right\"><\/span><\/button>\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<section\n\t\tid=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0257f15.59991895\"\n\t\tclass=\"accordion-panel\"\n\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0257f02.21858186\" style=\"height:0\">\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<p>Matters of public record refer to situations that are reportable by law to public authorities, such as law enforcement agencies, the coroner, or public health officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients who are involved in matters of public record have the same privacy rights as all other patients. While laws and\/or regulations require health care facilities to report a variety of information to public authorities, Samaritan still may not share that information with others, including the media, unless permitted or required by law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block_eb4d3ce5ec672092a5b123c2238d56f2\" class=\"shs-block accordion is-style-fill\">\n\t<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">\n\t\t<button\n\t\t\ttype=\"button\"\n\t\t\tid=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0259553.85500986\"\n\t\t\tclass=\"accordion-control\" class=\"iconfont-chevron-right\"><\/span><\/button>\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<section\n\t\tid=\"accordion_panel_69f1d9a0259561.55591852\"\n\t\tclass=\"accordion-panel\"\n\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion_title_69f1d9a0259553.85500986\" style=\"height:0\">\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<p>Staff in the department of Marketing &amp; Communications are available to assist local, regional, national and international news media in answering questions about Samaritan Health Services and its affiliated-entities, locating an expert spokesperson or obtaining more information about a news release or event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the media who require assistance after hours, on the weekends or holidays should contact Marketing &amp; Communications by sending an&nbsp;<a
