{"id":65063,"date":"2025-12-04T16:54:53","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T00:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/?p=65063"},"modified":"2025-12-04T16:54:57","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T00:54:57","slug":"marissa-smith-honored-with-gsrmc-daisy-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/news\/marissa-smith-honored-with-gsrmc-daisy-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Marissa Smith Honored With GSRMC DAISY Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<article class=\"article\">\n\t<header class=\"header\">\n\t\t<span class=\"type\"><\/span>\t\t<h1>Marissa Smith Honored With GSRMC DAISY Award<\/h1>\t\t<time>December 4, 2025<\/time>\n\t<\/header>\n\t<div id=\"block_465968a344bb9774712fbbe8489c5c8c\" class=\"shs-block block-news-article entry-content\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Witnessing a steady hand and prayerful heart prompted Marissa Smith\u2019s manager to write a DAISY award nomination letter for the Center for Women and Families nurse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That day a patient was experiencing a sudden, life-threatening complication and Smith responded with calm precision, helping to ensure the safety of both mother and baby the nominator wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe held the patient\u2019s hand, spoke words of comfort, advocated for her, prayed with her and reassured her,\u201d wrote Jenni Copeland, nurse manager. \u201cEven amidst the chaos, she made sure everyone felt cared for, demonstrating the true essence of nursing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copeland\u2019s nomination letter also pointed out that Smith anticipated every need while supporting the medical team being a reassuring presence for the mother throughout the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staff members also attested that this wasn\u2019t a one-off but a trait that has exemplified Smith\u2019s 20-year nursing career, most of which has been spent in the Labor and Delivery unit at Samaritan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith, who originally is from Monroe, said that she didn\u2019t grow up around nurses or even know much about the profession when she entered nursing school. But she knew she wanted to serve people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI liked science, and I liked people,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI thought nursing could be a role where I could help and serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith\u2019s colleagues describe her as a leader, a mentor and a source of strength. She credits her longevity to the patients she serves and the co-workers she trusts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never intended to stay this long,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I love the patient population, and I love my co-workers. It\u2019s just been a great place to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Willamette Valley native, who started her career on the medical-surgical unit at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, gave credit to the doctor involved in the event that led to her DAISY Award nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe&#8217;s a wonderful person, and really, all credit goes to the surgeon because she saved that patient&#8217;s life,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIn that moment, being there for the patient was the only role I needed to play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DAISY Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura autoimmune disease. The care Barnes received inspired his family to create the award to thank nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients\u2019 families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients, families and co-workers can nominate a nurse for a DAISY Award at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/patient-visitors\/honor-a-samaritan-employee\/daisy-nursing-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>samhealth.org\/DAISY<\/strong><\/a>.
