This unique model of care, where moderate and high-risk patients are collaboratively managed by both a midwife and an obstetrician, is the best of both worlds.”

This team-based prenatal care, also known as collaborative care, includes experts in normal pregnancy and childbirth (certified nurse-midwives) and experts in high-risk pregnancy and surgery (obstetricians). Research has shown collaborative care often improves the quality of care and the overall experience of pregnant patients and their families.

Collaborative care ensures coordinated communication among health care providers, reducing unnecessary testing and improving the patient experience. It also improves health outcomes and results in a higher likelihood of vaginal birth, less chance of cesarean delivery and lower preterm birth rates.

“Collaborative care is patient-centered care,” said Yeast. “The patient is the most important member of the health care team.
