But to feel well and stay well, there\u2019s more to consider than just physical health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why Samaritan providers recommend a holistic approach that encompasses all eight aspects of wellness, not just one or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWellness is not just the absence of illness,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/patients-visitors\/find-a-doctor\/godek-brent-1508841974\/\">Brent Godek, MD<\/a>, a family physician and medical director for Samaritan Health Services. \u201cWe encourage people to think beyond their physical state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wellness-includes-eight-aspects\">Wellness Includes Eight Aspects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Body<\/strong> \u2013 Being physically active, eating healthy and getting quality sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Community<\/strong> \u2013 Being connected and having a support system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emotions<\/strong> \u2013 Having effective coping strategies and satisfying relationships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environment<\/strong> \u2013 Being in safe, pleasant and stimulating surroundings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Finances <\/strong>\u2013 Accepting and understanding your money situation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mind <\/strong>\u2013 Recognizing your creative abilities and expanding your knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spirit <\/strong>\u2013 Having a sense of purpose and leading a meaningful life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Work <\/strong>\u2013 Finding ways to grow your skills to enrich your life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEach aspect contributes to the well-being of the whole person,\u201d Dr. Godek said. \u201cWhen one is out of proportion, it can affect the others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone has a medical condition or is experiencing a health problem, Dr. Godek encourages them to think more broadly than the diagnosis, medication or treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaking a holistic approach can have an impact beyond their medical condition or diagnosis,\u201d he said. \u201cIt can be preventive in avoiding future medical conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even for those experiencing good health, Dr. Godek said it\u2019s important not to take it for granted. Many people ignore the aspects of wellness until they get sick, when it can be harder to work on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And no matter how healthy you feel, there\u2019s always something you can do to improve your wellness, whether it\u2019s taking a class, working on a puzzle or starting a retirement account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have found that often the healthiest people are those who have found a way to be active and engaged when they were younger,\u201d he said. \u201cSo don\u2019t wait.
