In addition to losing his great love, he lost his co-pilot. Steele is legally blind and his wife handled all of their affairs: finances, medical appointments, grocery shopping and cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now living alone in the motor home he once shared with his wife, Steele was having to learn to do it all on his own. He was staying on a friend\u2019s property with no running water or heat, and his health began to rapidly decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Living with diabetes, he knew his persistent open leg wounds were problematic. His feet swelled and he was unable to walk far without falling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew things were getting bad, so I just started praying,\u201d said Steele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-help-from-a-friend\">Help From a Friend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A week later, while working on a church project, he showed a friend his wounds. The friend immediately called his wife, faith community nurse Deb Fell Carlson, RN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faith community nurses are licensed nurses who have taken special training to minister to people at their places of worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I saw Ron\u2019s legs and the overall condition he was in, I knew action had to be taken,\u201d said Fell Carlson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step: help get Steele enrolled in a good Medicare plan to cover his medical needs. Then, help schedule a visit with Bridget Shariat, DO, at <a href=\"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/find-a-location\/samaritan-health-clinic-sweet-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Samaritan Health Clinic &#8211; Sweet Home<\/a>. Dr. Shariat instigated a series of referrals to several Samaritan services for collaborative, comprehensive care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/health-services\/all-services\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lebanon Diabetes Education<\/a> taught me how to really care for my diabetes,\u201d said Steele. \u201cI learned what to eat, how to monitor my blood sugar levels, fun ways to exercise and how to check my skin for infections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/samhealth.org\/find-a-location\/samaritan-wound-vein-hyperbaric-medicine-lebanon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Samaritan Wound, Vein &amp; Hyperbaric Medicine &#8211; Lebanon<\/a> treated the wounds on his legs, which revealed problems with Steele\u2019s circulation. He underwent vein surgery that improved circulation, reduced pain and helped to prevent new leg ulcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-moving-on-with-life\">Moving On With Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next came physical therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPhysical therapy helps me manage my chronic pain and I have really come to enjoy it,\u201d said Steele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 15 years, Steele used opioids to control constant pain.
