Because every minute counts, we work closely with regional EMTs to be sure patients receive timely treatment for stroke.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are proud to provide outstanding health care to our Oregon communities including Albany, Corvallis, Eugene, Lebanon, Lincoln City, Newport, Salem and neighboring areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-stroke\">What Is a Stroke?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked and can\u2019t supply blood, and the oxygen in your blood, to the brain. Brain tissue dies without oxygen and blood flow must be restored. \u201cClot-buster\u201d drugs must be given within three hours from when the stroke first started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-kinds-of-strokes\">What Are the Kinds of Strokes?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two kinds of strokes. In an ischemic stroke, a blood clot blocks or plugs a blood vessel or artery in the brain. About 85% of all stroked are ischemic. In a hemorrhagic stroke, a blood vessel in the brain breaks and bleeds into the brain. Some risk factors you can change, and some you can\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-risk-factors-you-can-t-change\">Risk Factors You Can\u2019t Change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Previous heart attack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Race.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-risk-factors-you-can-change\">Risk Factors You CAN Change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High blood pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High cholesterol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heart disease (especially atrial fibrillation).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diabetes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obesity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metabolic syndrome (a group of risk factors from this list).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking a lot of alcohol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a warning stroke.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"Symptoms\" class=\"shs-block block-section grid-container has-gold-background-color\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"-Are\">Are You Having a Stroke?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-b-e-f-a-s-t\"><strong>B.E.   F.A.S.T<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every minute counts if you are having a stroke. Learn the symptoms and what you can do to improve the chances for a successful recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Balance<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Is there a sudden loss of balance or coordination?<br><strong>Eyes&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Is there sudden blurred or double vision or sudden, persistent vision trouble?<br><strong>Face<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Ask the person to smile. Is one or both sides of the face drooping?<br><strong>Arms<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one side drift down? Is there weakness or numbness on one side?<br><strong>Speech&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Does the person have slurred or garbled speech? Can they repeat simple phrases?<br><strong>Time<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 If you see any of these signs,&nbsp;<strong>call 911 immediately!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section U.S. will have a stroke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every 40 seconds someone will have a stroke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every three minutes someone dies from a stroke &#8212; it\u2019s the third leading cause of death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close to 46,000 more women than men will have a stroke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twice as many women die from strokes as from breast cancer every year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30\u201350% of
