Clinical Training for Dermatology Residents <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dermatology is an exciting specialization for graduate medical students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dermatology residents learn how to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with a diverse spectrum of dermatologic conditions in a community setting. Patient care is performed under the supervision of attending physicians that provide outstanding teaching and mentorship, led by program director Sarah Shangraw, MD<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents rotate through outpatient clinics the Willamette Valley in addition to serving as consultants for the inpatient medicine service at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center<\/a>. During training, residents experience a well-rounded curriculum which encompasses the main pillars of dermatology: medical, surgical, dermatopathology, pediatric dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Mohs Fellowship is also offered under the direction of Bill Lear, MD.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n

Didactics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our residents are instructed in basic science, clinical, and dermatopathological aspects of diseases. Lectures are conducted daily using Bolognia as our core reference, Hurwitz Clinical Pediatric Dermatology, Surgery of the Skin by Robinson, Dermatopathology (Requisites in Dermatology) by Elston and Comprehensive Dermatologic Drug Therapy by Wolverton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quarterly, residents participate in hands-on cosmetic days with Dr. Lauren Boudreaux, where they are trained in the use of neurotoxin, fillers, chemical peels, biostimulatories and lasers.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n

Elective Rotations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our residents rotate through medical specialties that enable diversification of medical knowledge and greater understanding of the appropriate interdisciplinary approach to patient care. We offer elective rotations in radiation\/oncology, plastic surgery, oculoplastics, podiatry, allergy\/immunology, inpatient pediatric dermatology, cutaneous oncology, vascular surgery, and dermatopathology among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conferences <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Residents attend quarterly meetings with the Oregon Dermatology Society where they present cases to a diverse group of academic and community dermatologists. In addition, our residents typically attend the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting. Our residents are also encouraged to attend other conferences throughout the year that are of interest to them.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n
